SO, growing up in a small town in Michigan, I don't think that I ever expected to stay here forever, but I'm not sure I expected the experiences that I've had either... Funny thing, I keep coming back!
When I met David, an immigrant from England, in September of 1998 my first few questions were, "How long have you been here? Do you like it? Do you plan on staying?"
I don't know how I would have felt if he had said, "Well, I like it here and I'd like to become a US citizen, but in 7 years I plan on moving to France for a while. Then I'll come back to Michigan for a bit before I move to CHINA"
Yep...we're moving to Shanghai...probably by February 1st 2012. We'll likely be gone at least 3 years but no longer than 5. That would have us home for W to start high school in the US.
As I write this, I'm not allowed to publish the fact yet, so I'll fill friends in on this blog site once I can let the cat out of the bag. Writing is therapy for me, so here I am, blabbing about something that no one will read. How very narcissistic of me, but aren't all blogs that way to a certain extent?
Hopefully, this will be a way (especially for the non-facebookers) to keep up with our grand Chinese adventure.
The kids are very receptive to the idea. At 7 and 10, they don't have the hugest of social lives to be leaving, and they really don't remember much of living in France. If they do, they probably expect China to be similar, and it'll be no big deal. Mostly, they're excited about the British school I've been looking at which has 'houses' like in the Harry Potter books. They're curious about how they will be sorted into their houses :-)...but not too excited about having to wear uniforms.
It's a pretty exciting adventure we're embarking, not without trepidation of course, but we like to mix things up a bit. I suspect this'll be our biggest, and I hope to make it a little interesting for anyone who wants to read it.
